Automated Cluster Building: How Topic Engine, Autopilot and the Calendar Plan Your Content Clusters
Content clusters are planned by the pipeline, not on a separate builder screen. Topic Engine ranks topics tied to your services, Autopilot plans starred topics first and then the best ranked, Build Cluster turns starred topics into a pillar plus supporting articles, and the Calendar schedules the pillar first and spreads the rest across days.
One of 53 criteria in AEO Rank, the citation-readiness score we run against every site we audit.
By Alex Shortov
Quick Answer
A content cluster is one in-depth pillar article plus several supporting articles on the same subject, all linking to each other. AEO Content plans clusters inside the pipeline, with no separate builder screen. Topic Engine ranks topics tied to your services. Autopilot plans from it, starred topics first and then the best ranked, and researches new topics only when it runs short. Star 3 to 20 topics on one subject and Build Cluster makes the best ranked one the pillar, an ultimate guide of about 8,000 words, with the others as supporting articles of 4,000 words or more. Schedule cluster on the Calendar plans the pillar first and spreads the rest across days.

What is a content cluster and why does it matter for AI visibility?
A content cluster is one pillar article plus several supporting articles on the same subject, all linking to each other, which shows AI engines that your site covers the subject in depth.
How are cluster topics picked without a separate cluster builder screen?
Topic Engine ranks topics tied to your services and checks each one for freshness and originality. Autopilot plans starred topics first, then the best ranked, and researches new topics only when the list runs short.
How do a pillar and its supporting articles get onto the calendar?
Build Cluster turns 3 to 20 starred topics into a pillar and its supporting articles. Schedule cluster on the Calendar plans the pillar first and spreads the rest across your date range within the daily cap.
Can a cluster publish to more than one section of my site?
Yes, on Premium and above. Free and Growth publish to one section of your site, while Premium can publish to two or more, for example /blog and /guides.
Can I still plan my own articles?
Yes. You can schedule a suggested topic, your own title or an article already in My Content on any day, or plan a date range by hand. Articles you schedule yourself keep their dates.
How long does each article in a cluster take?
A Signature Article takes about 30 to 45 minutes (median 34) and runs about 4,300 words. An ultimate guide pillar takes about 40 to 60 minutes and runs about 8,000 words.

Why Clusters Beat Standalone Articles for AI Visibility
A pillar plus its supporting articles answers many related questions on one subject, while a single article can only answer a handful of them well.
A standalone article is one shot at one question. Even an excellent 4,000 word piece can only target a few specific questions in its headings and FAQ. If buyers ask AI engines dozens of different questions about the same subject, one article leaves most of them unanswered.
Clusters solve that breadth problem. The pillar covers the broad overview questions. The supporting articles take the specific variants: “X for beginners,” “X vs Y,” “X pricing,” “X common mistakes.” Each one answers its own question with its own evidence.
AI engines respond to this shape for a structural reason. When ChatGPT or Perplexity decides whether to cite a domain on a subject, depth on that subject counts, not just one matching page. A site with a pillar plus six supporting articles on claims, codes, denials, audits, appeals and patient billing reads as deeper than a site with one article on insurance billing, even when that one article is as good as the pillar.
Clusters compound. Each supporting article strengthens the pillar, and the pillar helps each supporting article get cited.
How Are Cluster Topics Picked?
Topics come from Topic Engine, your ranked list of article ideas. It works from what people search for, the questions where AI engines do not quote you yet, and what your competitors answer. Every topic is tied to one of your services and checked against your existing content so it does not repeat a page you already have. Each batch of 40 topics is checked automatically for being current (discussed online in the last 90 days) and original.
Autopilot then plans from that list, so nobody has to pick topics by hand:
- Starred topics first. A star is your pick, so Autopilot takes starred topics before anything else.
- Then the best ranked topics that passed the freshness and originality check.
- New research only when the list runs short. If Topic Engine cannot fill the cycle, Autopilot researches a fresh batch and picks from the whole list again.
Autopilot also holds off planning more while two cycles’ worth of articles are still unpublished on your calendar, so the schedule does not pile up far ahead of what has gone live.
How Do a Pillar and Its Supporting Articles Get Built?
When you want one subject covered as a cluster, star its topics in Topic Engine and press Build Cluster:
- Star at least 3 and at most 20 topics on one subject. Build Cluster uses every starred topic, so unstar the ones that belong elsewhere first.
- The best ranked starred topic becomes the pillar, written as an ultimate guide (the Deep Dive Guide type in Studio).
- The other starred topics become its supporting articles, written as Signature Articles.
- The topics move to Queued, so Autopilot does not plan them a second time.
Build Cluster does not check that the starred topics share a subject, so choosing them is up to you.
The pillar and its supporting articles split the work by length and role.
| Article | Type | Length | Time to write | Role in the cluster |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pillar | Ultimate guide | About 8,000 words | About 40 to 60 minutes | The in-depth hub for the whole subject |
| Supporting article | Signature Article | 4,000 words or more (about 4,300 measured) | About 30 to 45 minutes (median 34) | Answers one specific question and links up to the pillar |
| Whole cluster | Pillar plus supporting articles | 4,000 words or more per article | Scheduled across days | Shows depth on one subject |
How Does the Calendar Schedule a Cluster?
On the Calendar, Schedule cluster takes a cluster and a date range. The pillar is planned first, and the supporting articles are spread evenly across the range, best ranked first, within your daily cap. The cap is 2 articles a day by default.
Planning is the approval. Each article is written ahead of its publish date (about a day ahead by default) and checked for AEO Rank when it is done. Then it either publishes on its date or waits for you, depending on how publishing is set up:
- Publish automatically sends each finished article to your site on its date. It needs a connected site, and most sites show the article within one or two minutes.
- Review first holds finished articles until you approve them.
- An optional quality gate keeps an Autopilot article below your Minimum AEO Rank unpublished until you edit or rewrite it.
Autopilot’s publishing schedule sets the weekdays, the number of articles per day and the time of day, or a random time.
Can a Cluster Publish to More Than One Section of Your Site?
Yes, on Premium and above. A section is a part of your site that articles publish under, for example /blog or /guides.
- Free and Growth publish every article to one section of your site.
- Premium and above can publish to two or more sections, so long guides and blog posts can each live in their own part of the site.
- Edit clusters on the AEO Website Status tab adds a section. On an Astro site, AEO Content also adds the page that lists the section’s articles and merges it once your site’s own checks pass.
When a site publishes to more than one section, each section can carry its own author and its own number of articles per day. Autopilot then divides each cycle’s topics between the sections, and every calendar card shows which section it publishes to.
Can You Still Plan Your Own Articles?
Yes. Autopilot keeps the schedule full, and the Calendar stays yours:
- New article opens Schedule article for any day. Pick from Suggestions, type your own title (Suggest title offers twelve versions of it), or schedule an article already in My Content.
- Plan manually, in Plan Content, lets you pick a date range, the publish days and the articles per day, then the topics, and confirm the schedule.
- Schedule on any topic in Topic Engine puts it on the Calendar, and Write opens the article form with the topic filled in.
If you cancel Autopilot, only the articles it planned are affected. Articles you scheduled yourself keep their dates.
How Long Does Each Article in a Cluster Take?
A signature article takes about 30 to 45 minutes to generate and an ultimate guide about 40 to 60 minutes. The articles are scheduled across days through the editorial calendar, not built in one sitting.
Measured over 14 days of completed jobs to 2026-10-11:
- Signature Article: about 30 to 45 minutes (median 34 minutes, 10th to 90th percentile 27 to 44 minutes) for about 4,300 words
- Ultimate guide pillar: about 40 to 60 minutes for about 8,000 words
- Every supporting article: 4,000 words or more
- AEO Rank check: included in the times above
- Publish: most sites show a published article within one or two minutes
At the default cap of 2 articles a day, a pillar plus six supporting articles publishes over about four publishing days. With Review first on, add the time you spend reading each article before you approve it.
How Are Cluster Articles Interlinked?
Internal links are what turn a set of articles into a cluster. Each article’s internal links come from two places: the pages found in your site’s audit, and every article AEO Content has already published on your site. Because the pillar is scheduled first, supporting articles written after it goes live can link up to it, and later supporting articles can link to earlier ones.
Before an article publishes, any link to a page on your own site that is not in that list is removed, so internal links point to pages that exist. See how AEO articles are built for how each article chooses its evidence and structure.
What Does a Cluster Do for the AEO Site Rank?
Clusters move the criteria that measure depth on a subject rather than the quality of one page:
- Topic Coherence: a cluster is concentrated depth on one subject, which is what this criterion measures.
- Internal Linking: the pillar and its supporting articles link to each other inside one subject.
- Content Depth: every article in the cluster runs 4,000 words or more.
Each cluster article also goes through the same writing pipeline and the same AEO Rank check as any standalone article.
When Should You Build a Cluster Instead of Standalone Articles?
Build a cluster when the questions AI engines do not quote you on gather around one subject that maps to a service you sell.
Clusters are the right shape when:
- The visibility gap sits on a specific subject, not ten unrelated ones
- The subject maps to a service or product you want to be cited for
- Competitors already cover the subject with a pillar and supporting articles
- You publish often enough to keep the cluster moving, which Autopilot handles once it is on
Standalone articles are the right shape when:
- The gap is spread across many unrelated questions
- You are just starting and need broad coverage before going deep
- One specific question needs a single direct answer
- Your site is already deep on the subject and needs a fresh entry
You do not have to make this call article by article. Autopilot keeps planning the best topics across your services, and when you see a subject worth owning, you star its topics and press Build Cluster. The Questions tab in Results shows where a rival is named instead of you, which is a good place to find that subject.
